Three Exciting Reds – Modern Classics

2016 ‘ALEXANDER VINEYARD’ SHIRAZ

Estate grown, single vineyard, certified organic. We love this wine! Full of character and class, the 2016 Alexander Vineyard is a supple, smooth shiraz of tremendous style.

Initially inspired by Stephanie’s love of Rhone wines, her deft handling of fruit from this unique vineyard has resulted in the most stylish of shiraz wines, accurately reflecting the cooler vineyard site yet defying the common preconception of the bolder Clare Valley Shiraz. This is a result of the gently northerly sloping low but even site, the Alexander Vineyard sits isolated – a perfect site in the north eastern most corner of the Watervale subregion.

This is hand made with a very traditional winemaking approach: handpicked and partial whole bunch foot-crushed, with the balance cold soaked on skins then fermented in purpose-built vessels which allow gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannins.  The wine then spent 18 months maturation in 40% new French oak barriques prior to blending and bottling then bottle aged for nine months before release.

Deep crimson-purple with youthful edge.
Pretty red fruits with vanillin spice – , more restrained and stylish, compared to the 2015
Blueberry & spice, velvet textured, vibrant fruit cloaked in classy oak. This is succulent and juicy, generously flavoured and with mouth puckering fine tannins. Stylish new world shiraz that stands out for its appealing mid-weight texture – refreshing in our world of big-boned beefy Australian reds. Cellar for 15 years with ease but fabulous now with Moroccan lamb.

PRAISE FOR THE 2015

Manages to be unashamedly full-bodied and decidedly complex, yet retains perfect balance, with a fresh, juicy quality reflecting its modest alcohol. There is a rainbow of fruit flavours on the long palate and lingering aftertaste.

2016 CLARE VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Is this Australia’s best kept cabernet secret even though the critics keep raving about it? A truly limited (250 dozen) release single vineyard, and organically grown – as are all of Mount Horrocks wines.

Taking a classic winemaking approach: hand-picked twelve days on skins for flavour and complexity then eighteen months in French oak barriques, Stephanie has managed to combine richness and complexity with elegance, delivering a super stylish cabernet worthy of the finest cellar.

Deep purple.
Dark red fruits and mocha, nutmeg and spice.
Composed and restrained, this stylish wine delivers typical currant, black olive and herbal tones that define great cabernet. Terrific purity and length.  It’s a perfect mid-weight red to enjoy now yet with the structure and class to age in the long term – 15 years plus.

PRAISE FOR THE 2015

Not a hair out of place in this serious-feeling cabernet. Pitch-perfect medium weight, deep concentration yet a lively freshness to acidity and general feel of the wine. There’s lilac and lavender floral notes in cassis and black olive characters. Tannins sleek, long, fine. A wine of distinction.

2016 CLARE VALLEY NERO D’AVOLA

Can you believe it’s been five years now since the introduction of this delicious red? Inspired by the wines of Sicily, Stephanie planted Mount Horrocks’ Nero D’Avola vineyard in 2007. The grapes were harvested by hand, then cold-soaked prior to a quick nine day ferment. Daily plunging ensures ideal extraction until the wine is racked to French oak barriques (20% new) for 12 months maturation prior to bottling.

Brightly coloured and fragrant with raspberry red fruits and floral notes.
Italian in origin yet distinctly suited to our Australian climate, served cool, it brims with juicy dark cherry, raspberry and plum, soft tannins and gentle spice. This may sound light but it packs a punch of deliciousness – you are sure to find it so dangerously more-ish. Enjoy now to 5 years.

PRAISE FOR THE 2015

Third straight vintage that I’ve loved this wine. Savoury, fruity, disturbingly delicious. Australia’s best nero d’Avola? … I could drink a hell of a lot of this.
