    2016 Mount Horrocks Semillon, Clare Valley

    In a league of its own, this is semillon on steroids (in a truly great way), barrel-fermented in 40 per cent new oak that shows in its faintly smoky/charry nose yet never dominating the citrus zest and lemon curd fruit. Once you dwell further, there’s more than just that – stone fruits for sure, with a floral notes too, like the waft of field grasses and wheat. It’s a serious wine drinker’s sophisticated white, totally engaging and ultimately delicious.

    Scintillating, pure, vibrant Riesling. An epee thrust of citrus, green apple, crushed slate-like minerality. It’s got so much energy, feels so pent up, tight, squeaky, impressively long. It’s for drinking now with vigour, or lazing over after a couple of decades in the cellar.

    Just unreal.

    Estate organically grown; open-fermented in purpose-designed vessels, 15% whole bunches, foot-stamped, matured for 18 months in French barriques (40% new). The evocative bouquet semaphores the satsuma plum and blackberry fruits at the heart of the wine, surrounded and supported by fine-grained tannins building authority to the finish of the immaculately balanced medium-bodied palate; the oak is totally integrated.
