Clare Valley Cabernet Merlot (Archive)

2001 CABERNET SAUVIGNON/MERLOT CLARE VALLEY ($36.00) RED 89 points

The Wine Advocate, (Issue 161) 31 Oct 2005

ROBERT PARKER USA

Mount Horrocks does a good job with Bordeaux varietals, and their 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot is an impressive, opaque ruby/purple-tinged blend offering excellent aromas of flowers, black currants, cherries, underbrush, and subtle wood. Drink this long classy, graceful Australian red over the next 7-10 years.

Intriguing up front, this balances high tones of cedar and rose with bass notes of chocolate and dark fruit marmalade. The flavors persist, even if the vintage didn't provide the drive to fill this out completely. It's a fine-boned cabernet sauvignon (90 percent) for roast leg of lamb.

Mount Horrocks’ dynamic owner, Stephanie Toole, sourced the fruit for this blend from mature, dry-grown vineyards in the heart of the Clare Valley. It has a wonderful rich, concentrated bouquet of dark plums and mulberries, with overtones of mocha and fine oak. The palate is equally concentrated, with a fine layer of silky tannin and a very long finish. This wine confirms Mount Horrocks’ “rising star” status.

They hardly needed it, but Stephanie Toole’s wines have increased in depth and intensity since she cut out her irrigation regime and began pruning to reduce her vineyard yields. While many seem to expect the cabernet merlot blend to be rather bland and mellow, this is not what we’ve got here. Rather it’s a wine of typical Clare intensity; smooth, dark and mysterious, with a long, dry, velvety tannin finish.

Mount Horrocks rocks! Get down! We love this wine. The label says it's made from grapes off low-cropping, unirrigated vines, which confirms the concentration that you can taste for yourself.
CURRENT RELEASE 1998 Smart stuff, indeed. It smells of concentrated blackberries, ripe and true, skilfully melded with classy French oak. The flavours are singly delicious; sweet, rich, ripe berry fruit supported by a firm, tight tannin structure. It has great potential and while it's lovely now, it will be magic in a decade. Then serve with aged parmesan.
