2005 Mount Horrocks Shiraz

This single-vineyard shiraz from the Watervale region of the Clare Valley is unmistakably regional. It has lush blackberry and mulberry characters on the nose with hints of chocolate and the palate is ripe and concentrated, with fleshy fruit and soft tannins. Buy it for the cellar.

2004 Mount Horrocks Watervale Shiraz
This is a big solid red, a contrast to the Seppelt Chalambar in both its spectrum of flavours and structure. The trademark earthy, ripe-plum, blackberry and dry-spice aromas of Clare are there in abundance, with a twist of mint and a lick of nutty oak (but not coconutty or domineering, as all the oak was French). It’s a strongly built red with a persuasive tannin grip, and this suggests some cellaring would be in order. I’d favour drinking it between 2009 and 2020 – especially as it comes with a screwcap, which tends to slow the average rate of ageing slightly. Hearty food is advised here, especially when the wine is young: hard Italian cheeses such as aged reggiano, grana padano or pecorino, and rare, bloody meat, especially grilled rump steak.

When
the '04 vintage was fresh in the tanks, the world around
the country was that the wines suffered from over-cropping.
But as they've started to come onto the market, we find
ourselves highly impressed with the quality and style
of many '04 reds. Winemaker Stephanie Toole has excelled
herself here
CURRENT
RELEASE 2004
This
is a deeply coloured, big, gutsy shiraz that needs time
and is a bit too young to open now. It's perfumed and
very attractive with licorice/anise and floral/violet
aromas, while the palate is somewhat aggressive and
callow, with impressively deep flavour and some firm
tannin astringency. It should be a superb red in a few
years. Then drink it with aged Italian parmesan.

A
mega wine for this maker, scented with violets and other
flowers, licorice/anise too. A big, gruff palate with
rich, almost syrupy flavour and assertive tannins. Needs
time; lots of potential

A dusty aroma of dried herbs and musky spices underpins
a briary expression of cassis, raspberries and plums
with undertones of cedar and capsicum. Initially forward,
round and fleshy, the palate then becomes greenish,
thin and sappy, lacking genuine length. Some well-handled
oak doesn't quite conceal its stressed and green-edged
nature.
